The amount of wine made every year is simply staggering. It is drunk in nearly every country in the world and invariably it is from a glass. The question is however, why do we use glass? Why not from a mug, wooden goblet or plastic cup? Sadly, there is no definitive answer for this. Actually, wine is enjoyed from a number of different containers, other than glass, in many different places. For example, wooden cups are used in Thailand and in Japan they often drink their wine from a ceramic vase-like cup. However, the overriding choice of tableware drinking vessel, wherever you go, is glass. It turns out that this is due more to the unsuitability of other materials that the excellence of glass, so let take a look at the other options.
Wood. Wood is used in some countries to consume wine as mentioned earlier, however wood really isn't the ideal material to be using. The first problem is staining, which is a common issue if your drinking red wine from your wooden cup. Even if the wood is of a very high quality, staining will happen. Further to this, wood has a habit of rotting when its remains wet for any great length of time. So you would have to spend time making sure it was bone dry after using each time.
Metal. If you've ever used a metal vessel to consume wine from, you'll understand how the flavour is not quite right. Metals have a lot of ions and with a lot of wines, something called displacement can occur. This essentially means that often a number of the metal's ions displace into the wine and this causes an alteration in the flavour. This is why you often pick up metallic notes when drink from this type of cup. Ceramic. Like glass, ceramic is non porous, does not release any of its qualities into the wine, and can be easily cleaned with a glass cloth. For these reasons it utilised an an alternative, however it will never be as popular as glass due to one elemental floor - you can't see through it. A large part of the experience of enjoying a fine wine is watching it swirl around the glass, admiring its body. It is a very primitive desire and it has stuck with us ever since glass was invented.
