how can I test how much lead is in our drinking water?
We have just bought a lovely Victorian house. The survey says it probably has lead piping for the water system. Does anyone know how I can test our drinking water for lead content or what we could do about it?
This is a good example of utterly foolish behaviour by surveyors. They all say this and it is very very unlikely to be a problem
First the Victorians did not all get chronic lead poisoning from their water supplies. Maybe from adulterated food but not the pipes. Lead pipes last a long time because they don't rust. That means that the oxidisation sts on lead are not soluble in water. So bare lead exposed to air or water containing I then for s a skin which seals the surface. As was correctly pointed out if the water is very very soft that could dissolve the salt and get it in your water but the water companies treat the water so this does not happen.
Don't get into this as an issue On its own. if your incoming pipe needs replacing because the flow is poor that is a good reason to dig up the front garden and replacing with blue MDPE. Pipe is a good idea. But if the flow is good and you have no leaks save the money. You don't need to do this.
