Is African Copper Turquoise real natural turquoise?
Turquoise, regardless of its country of origin, is a hydrous aluminum phosphate, found in areas where copper also exists. The blue in turquoise comes from the copper, the green from iron deposits. Some, like my favorite, Sleeping Beauty, are clear New Mexico sky color, but you can also get matrix in turquoise from veins or inclusions in the rock. Turquoise from Utah and Colorado tends to be more green in color.
A lot of Native Americans are now buying blocks of turquoise from China, where they have not mined out all the hard gem quality, and some still comes from places in the Middle East, like Turkey and Persia (Iran). Both Chinese and Persian turquoise tend to be pale blue.
The type you are asking about is a natural turquoise IF the people selling it are honest. It is a very common practice to fabricate turquoise, and if you are in doubt, you need to take it to a gemologist who specializes in copper silicates. I went to look at some online, on eBay, and it certainly appears to be a natural stone, but as far as buying it goes....always check.
