How do I change the date on my FAFSA application?
More specific, how do I select a different filing period?
Because stupid me, when I applied for fafsa around november, I accidentally selected the 2009-2010 school year, when I was really supposed to choose 2010 - 2011. I've made the pin, signed it electronically, and gotten my SAR (student aid report).
What happens now? Can I change the date somehow or start a new one? Thanks.
Not stupid...the FAFSA for 10/11 wasn't available in November so you would have only been able to apply for 09/10 at that time. The 10/11 FAFSA is now available as of last week (01/02/10) at:
www.FAFSA.ed.gov
You just click on "fill out your FAFSA" in the center box and now you can choose the 10/11 option. Some of the information you entered on the 09/10 will transfer over. The 10/11 application is good for Summer 2010 through Spring 2011. It is best to do the 10/11 application early (January/February) because:
1. There are priority deadlines to be eligible for other grants that look at the date in which you applied for FAFSA.
2. Most grants are first-come-first-served and even though PELL grants usually don't run out, FSEOGrant is limited and you don't want to miss out on the extra money if your school offers it.
We as Financial Aid Administrators can always make corrections to your FAFSA if your "estimated" income (provided you and/or your parents have not filed for 2009 taxes) needs to be corrected. Don't wait until after you file your taxes, you may miss out on the extra grants. That is why FAFSA gives you the option of "already completed my return" OR "will file, but have not yet".
If you are attending for this Spring 2010 you did the right application (09/10). The 2009/10 application is for Spring 10.
