What happens when you mix two different recessive traits?
I am doing a paper for drosophila melanogaster (fruit flies) and I have mixed apricot eyes with ruby eyes. They are both recessive. Is there a specific ratio that the offspring should follow? like 25:50:25? I'm a little confused. It would take more then a simple punnent square to figure it out because they're two different recessive traits.
If these are both simple recessive traits and are a long way apart in the genome (no linkage), then you'd use a 'double' Punnett square. I'll just call the two genes A and B. Each of your flies will have one gene for A (lets say not apricot is AA or Aa and apricot is aa) and one gene for B (not ruby BB or Bb, ruby bb). That means that each gamete will have one allele of the A gene and one allele of the B gene (remember that the letters outlining your punnett square refer to gametes!). I am going to further assume (based on my experience with rat coat color genetics) that if you have a double-recessive fly (ruby + apricot in one animal) there will be a third phenotype. If you mate ONLY apricot (aa B-) and ruby (A-bb) flies your genotypes could be:
situation 1: aaBB x AAbb
situation 2: aaBb x Aabb
situation 3: aaBB x Aabb
situation 4: aaBb x AAbb
in situation 1, all of the resultant flies would be AaBb (normal eye color) because the gametes would all be aB x Ab
in situation 2, there could be gametes aB and ab from one parent and Ab and ab from the other, a Punnett square of this situation illustrates that this gives you 1 normal eyes: 1 apricot: 1 ruby : 1 double-recessive
in situation 3, one parent could only produce aB gametes, while the other could produce Ab or ab. This cross would result in 1 normal eyed: 1 apricot
in situation 4, one parent could produce aB and ab, while the other could only produce Ab. This cross would result in 1 normal eyed: 1 ruby.
The way to predict the exact ratio would be to know the genotype of both parents, which could be found by doing the experiment outlined above and watching for the ratios outlined
