The poobahs of our popular culture never seem happy unless they're taking
entertainment down to the "next level" of deviancy. When they undertake
remakes of Hollywood classics - especially the comedies - that's when you see
how far we've fallen.
The forthcoming modern-day adaptation of "The Three Stooges" isn't going to be
a celebration of that iconic family comedy. The trailer features Moe poking
the eyes of "Snooki" Polizzi of the uber-sleazy MTV show "Jersey Shore." But
that's nothing compared to the real absurdity of 19-year-old Sports
Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton playing a nun at the orphanage where the
Stooges grew up.
Not just a nun, but a swimsuit-model nun. In the trailer, Upton emerges from a
swimming pool in a tiny black bikini, a rosary hanging around her neck, and a
traditional habit on her head. As Moe and Larry lewdly gawk at her, Curly
says, "Hiya Sister Bernice. There's something different about you. Did you get
a haircut?"
Religious sisters take a vow of chastity. Hollywood loves to mock the Catholic
Church for being out of touch.

Is there a viewfinder that simulates black and white photography?
I heard of a small eyepiece that one can carry around, and when you look through it gives a black and white image, eliminating all color. Has anyone heard of this? This would be handy to determine if a scene will work well in b/w.
No, but you can use practically any cheap point and shoot digital camera set to the b/w mode to see how a scene will look in b/w. You do not have to take the photo and then look at it, you have a real time view right on the camera. The only use I see for this, however, is if you are using b/w film in a film camera. If you are shooting with any digital camera, you should never set it to shoot in black and white mode. You can always convert to b/w later in software, and do a better job of it than what the camera will do. You can then save the b/w conversion as a new file and have both the color and b/w version of the photo. If you shoot with the camera set to b/w, all color data is discarded and you cannot recover it, and lots of people regret doing that.
But you really do not have to fret over all this. Practically anything looks good in b/w. Think of it like this. When looking at any scene, stop and analyze it and ask yourself if COLOR is the overriding essence of the scene or not. For example, to me, photos of flowers look absurd in b/w. The color is 90% of the beauty of the flower. It is of vital importance to the photo. Some landscapes are the same way. Portraits, however, will often benefit from using b/w because the soul of the person is showing, not the color of their clothes. Of course, if the point of the photo IS their clothes, then color is important.
Learning to "see" in b/w is not just about how something looks without color. It is about realizing if color plays an important part to the scene or not. In many cases, it actually does not, and so you really don't have to have some kind of device showing you how something looks without color. Color typically can distract the eye from the subject and what the photographer is trying to say with the photo, and that is why b/w is so often used in "art" type of photography. It is not simply for the fact of being in b/w, but so the message can come through without color adding meaningless distractions.
