Scanning Tin Type?
Is it possible to scan tin type onto your computer or a CD? If not is there any way to make the picture get onto your computer?
I put in a google search on copying tintypes, and got a hit on a site that mentioned that you can copy it on orthographic film and end up with an image in a full tonal scale.

they have a lower tonality--they won't have a "white" detail really. It's more of a mid to low gray level. You can copy a tintype onto ortho film rather well, actually--toss a grayscale in there, and pump up the development to increase the contrast. You can then turn around and print it onto modern paper and get a full scale image actually--one that is deceiving. It will look more like a b/w print than a tintype, because you've expanded the tones.

If you don't want to go through that trouble, set up a copy stand. Make sure your camera is parallel to the image. Have lights on both sides, in between the image and the camera, at 45 degree angles from the image. That way any reflections won't hit the camera and cause glare. Put a polarizing filter on the camera's lens to further reduce glare. That's how to copy a normal image of any type. I'm not sure how well it will work with a tintype, but it's worth a try. If you just put it in a scanner, you will get glare reflected straight back, so that won't work so well.
