Want a surefire way to make your baby shower memorable? Set the mood from the moment guests arrive with your decorations. Attractive and fun decor add to the excitement and tone of the shower, and the secret to success with decorations is simple: choose a theme. Once you have a theme, the rest of the baby shower elements fall into place: color, general decor, wall decor, table decor, and food.
Baby Shower Theme
There are endless theme possibilities. Let your imagination and circumstances guide you. Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:
- Nursery Rhymes - A classic theme everyone can relate to.
- Tea Party - Perfect for those expecting a baby girl.
- Disney Characters - We all have fond memories of our Disney pals!
- Diaper Party - Use diaper-shaped invites, decor, and gifts of diaper packets!
- Stuffed Animals - Which one's your favorite?

Have napkin holders made from baby bracelets. Or how about cookies in baby or animal shapes? A favorite is to have a diaper cake... no, not a baked cake in the shape of square diapers, but a tower of diapers assembled in the shape of a traditional cake! And of course, fresh-cut flowers in the color of the theme are always a welcome addition to the party.
Matching tableware such as plates, cups, spoons, forks, and napkins in the same color are simple and effective ways to round out the theme. Many party supply stores carry a wide variety of these items for the shower. White tablecloths sprinkled with animal-shaped confetti completes the table.
Food
Home-made or store-bought, either way, plenty of food is key to a successful baby shower. Here are some ideas that have worked out well in parties that I've hosted or been to. A macaroons, chocolate candies, a layer cake, marshmallows, chocolate- or yogurt-covered raisins and nuts. All these items are available at your local grocers, I'm sure. Here's a favorite of mine: serving milk or vanilla ice cream in clear, plastic baby bottles! And to help keep guests' stomachs from grumbling during the gift opening, supply them with edible party favors: chocolate-covered almonds served in baby booties and tied together with a white ribbon.
There are many fun-filled and creative ways to decorate a baby shower. An imaginative host will enjoy this occasion to honor the expectant mother and to hone her creative skills. Have fun!
