The Tagua nuts come in different sizes, some of them are as small as olive and some of them are as big as an orange, the average size of nuts being around 4 cms. The Tagua nuts have a brown skin and to attain a marble look the skin is partially peeled and polished. To obtain creamy white and ivory color the skin is completely peeled. Other colors are obtained dyeing either with natural dyes extracted from the roots and flowers or with convetional textile dyes. The Tagua nuts are cut, drilled and polished in various shapes depending on the design and requirement.
The use of the Tagua nut was first discovered in early 19the century and until in the late World War II the industry had been established in three continents majorly. First it was established in most of the countries in Europe. In the late Victorian era Tagua beads were used to make some fancy ivory items such as dices, jewelry, handles, bags etc, later becoming the most used material for clothing buttons. After the advent of synthetic plastic the use of Tagua in making various items went down.
